This journey of hundred`s of miles began with a single step" Education is the highway that leads to a nation and community`s progress and prosperity. But while other communities in India have travelled far and wide on this path, the Muslim community lags far behind. The accumulation of knowledge is a focal point in Islamic faith as the very first revelation to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) - and through him all Muslims - was to `read in the name of God." Muslims took this decree to heart and began to read, not only the Quran and Hadith, but also delved into subjects as diverse as astronomy, physics, philosophy, mathematics, medicine etc. Sadly, since then Muslims have not done justice to their impressive pedigree and history. Their economic and social progress remains stunted, as they have neglected education. The great schools of learning which Islamic conversation was famous for are lost. We need to rebuild them and re-lay the foundation for our future generations. The Muslim community is yearning for learning institutions that inspire us and facilitate our progress. And it is our duty, as members of this great religion, to take a step forward on this highway that leads to economic, social and political sovereignty. The Indian Muslim community is denied the privileges and benefits accorded to other communities. As such, they receive no patronage or even encouragement from the powers that be. The community`s only course of action is to seek self-reliance and stand on its own two feet and compete with other communities on even keel. Years ago Sir Syed, the great visionary, provided inspiring leadership. This message rang far and wide, reverberating to a tiny, remote village called Bhatkal. Some of the enlightened village elders like Late: Janab M.M. Siddique, I.H. Siddique and F.A.Hassan Sahebs embraced Sir Syed`s vision and lit the village with the idea of starting a primary School. A handful of community men set up a trust Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen in 1919, with the mission to impart contemporary and religious education to the people of Bhatkal and near by villages. Their commitment and efforts more than 80 years ago have borne fruit and paid rich dividends to the town. Started humbly as a primary school for boys, the institute was later upgraded into a high school by 1929. Over the years, this institution has been instrumental in grooming thousands of students from Bhatkal and nearby villages for the future. In keeping with the needs of the time and the cultural and religious background of the community, Anjuman has set up fifteen institutions of modern learning over the period from its inception until now. Providing religious education and character building is part of the curriculum. The range of institutions vary from basic education right from the nursery level to higher education of degree colleges as well as a professional college of engineering imparting technical education including computer science. Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen has not only expanded to cater to the growing needs of Muslims to provide education to rich and poor alike, but it has also provided the opportunity to many non-Muslims to use its educational institutions. While the Anjuman has expanded to cover all spheres of education, at the same time, it has not compromised on the quality of education imparted. The glorious example of the quality of education is the 100 per cent results with distinction in most of the branches of engineering in the final year of the academic year 2002-2003 of the Anjuman Engineering College. One of the basic reasons of social, economic and political backwardness of the Muslim community is the lack of education of Muslim women. The Anjuman has given due importance to educating women without compromising on their religious and cultural beliefs. Separate high schools and colleges have been established for women where only women faculty teaches. The Anjuman not only provides quality education but it also stresses on the overall development of students in the field of indoor and outdoor sports, debating, religious education, social and national service, character building and other extra-curricular activities. The Anjuman has taken care of the residential needs of outside students by providing hostel for engineering and degree colleges, providing a decent environment. The Islamic Centre & Research Centre at the campus provides them the opportunity to learn and practice Islamic faith and offer prayers. Let us pray to the Almighty Allah that Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeeen Bhatkal will pursue the goal that it`s founders have set, i.e., to impart modern education in an Islamic environment and to build the character of Muslim youth to be good citizens of India. Since then, the small acorn that Anjuman members had sown has grown into a giant oak tree.
