West Bengal state government has taken decision to raise the number of seats in colleges for the second time due to high cutoff marks. Education minister Bratya Basu stated that a notice will be issued soon to all colleges to increase 10% seats in all departments.
On the previous year seats were increased due to the same reason. As its result most of the students who belonged to ISC & CBSE board secured their position on the merit lists in colleges. This year the majority of H.S candidates have scored between 30% & 50% which is much below than the scores obtained by ISC & CBSE candidates.
Dipak Kar, principal of Asutosh College informed that they calculate a unique index marks for each student. The cutoffs in subjects like English, physics, economics & geography were very high. The first merit list comprised of only a few HS students. If implementation of the government’s decision is exercised then many students will be benefited.
The state government has also issued order to colleges that have websites to operate online admission. According to the state’s education minister, it will simplify the admission procedure. Approximately 150 colleges have agreed to hold entire admission process through online system.
