On Monday, in a function in St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, former minister and Stephanian, Mani Shankar Aiyar mocked Kirori Mal College (KMC) and said, “Actor Amitabh Bachchan was the sole achievement of KMC.” The MP had come to deliver a lecture on ‘Governance and Coruption: Is Panchayati Raj a Solution?’
Aiyar had also said negative about Hans Raj College on the last Friday due to which some angry Hans Raj students went into the function to confront him. In the function, he mocked Hans Raj again and its alumnus, sports minister, Ajay Maken and said, “I know him (Maken). I do not think he has written that letter. He is a decent boy from a decent background with his only handicap being the college he went to." The letter referred here was written by Maken. On last Friday, in a TV interview, Aiyar had commented that he could not believe that a B.A Pass student from Hans Raj College could use words like ‘dichotomous’ in a letter.
Also, Aiyar asked the students to bring together B.A Pass students of both St. Stephen’s College and Hans Raj College and make them pronounce ‘dichotomous’. “I do not believe the student from Hans Raj will be able to do it," he said.
Aiyar, further adds, “If anyone discriminates against a student of Hans Raj College because of my remarks, please make it clear to him or her that I referred to Maken as being a BA-Pass. He is not a BA (Hons) student. Moreover, if any placements are affected because of my remarks, tell me and I shall personally ensure the student gets through."
Around 20 students from Hans Raj College had gone to St. Stephen’s College in a view to protest with a letter which demanded apology from the MP. The letter was signed by 800 students. Gaurav Gupta, a second year student at Hans Raj, expresses his anger at Aiyar and says, “We want to ask him why students of one of the best colleges are at the receiving end of such a condescending remark. His remarks are directed at BA Pass students from our college, we want him to see our capabilities."
On being asked about his rough comments about KMC and Hans Raj, Aiyar said, “I said what I had to say. I told them some things which they did not know. They can go back and discuss it with their friends."
