Brick by Red Brick — Ravi Matthai and the making of IIM Ahmedabad, a book by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) professor TT Ram Mohan on the story of the premier institute was launched on Monday at the IIMA campus. The book was unveiled by chairman of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and chief guest at the occasion C Rangarajan.
While elaborating on the book, Mohan said that IIMA is a unique institute that has remained on top for five decades, mainly because of the culture and process put in place at the institute by Vikram Sarabhai and Ravi Matthai. Interestingly, Rangarajan, chief guest at the function has worked closely with Matthai and is a former IIMA director.
Mohan elaborated, "He taught three main aspects to the institute - autonomy, freedom of expression and sense of faculty governance. There was serious threat of autonomy - in the admission process as top people in the government would try to influence (the process)."
"Matthai showed that it possible to take grants from the government but at the same time, maintain autonomy (by not allowing it to influencing the institute's process)," he further said.
The 280-odd page book elaborates on different aspects of IIM-A from design and foundation point to the institutes' style and substance.
