Chancellor of MU receives Malaysian award

  • Dr Ramdas M Pai, Chancellor of Manipal University received a prestigious honour of ‘Datuk’ which is a Malaysian award on December 10, 2011. Dr Pai was given the award of Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) on that day in conjunction with the birthday of the Governor of Melaka.

    This award was initiated in 1978 by the Malacca Government State and is given to those people who have done something good and meritorious for Malaysia and particularly Malacca. The person who receives the award is called ‘Datuk’ and his wife is named as ‘Datin’. The award is given in the form of cash.

    According to the release of Manipal University,”Dr Pai, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan earlier this year, showcases the recognition of Melaka State and Malaysia for his excellent, exceptional and continuing contribution in the field of education, especially in the establishment and expansion of the Melaka-Manipal Medical College.”

    The release also stated, “It also highlights Malaysia's recognition for the Manipal Group's presence in Malaysia through Stempeutics Research (Malaysia) and the newly established Manipal International University.”

    Before Pai, Bollywood actor, Shah Rukh Khan has also received this Malaysian award. Thus, Pai has now become the second Indian to receive this prestigious Malaysian award.
