On Friday, China again backed the initiative of building Nalanda University again. However, the governing body of Nalanda University recently conducted a board meeting in Beijing and discussed about the university’s future with the Chinese leadership.
Following the last year’s meeting of East Asia Summit, the Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao invited the Governing Board, led by Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen to hold the board meeting in China. The conclusion of last year’s summit was support for the project.
On Friday, the Governing board also met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, Zhang Zhijun who supported China’s backing to the initiative.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin, “The proposal to reestablish Nalanda University is one of the key projects of the East Asia Summit."
China has already announced to donate U.S $1 million in support of the project.
