On Monday, hundreds of students of the reputed Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chromepet, carried out a day long demonstration against the dean. The demonstration was carried out as the students put allegation on the dean for harassing the students.
Since the ‘affected’ students and the hostellers of the Thamarabharani Hostel did not came forward to discuss the issue with the management and teachers, the Vice-chancellor of Anna University, P. Mannar Jawahar has declared the institution ‘indefinitely closed’.
With a view to protest, the students locked themselves inside the hostel and said that the dean M. Thamaraiselvi was harassing the students in the name of enforcing discipline.
However, the college authorities denied any such allegation. They were only cracking down on those section of students who invited outsiders to their rooms and involved in misbehavior. The action was taken against students only after giving several warnings.
Mr. Jawahar, angry of the conduct of the students, said, “Solving the problems of my students is my first priority. I have been here (MIT campus) since morning. The students are not coming forward to talk to me. They wanted to meet me alone and I was waiting for them in a room for 90 minutes and even then they did not come.”
While day-scholars left in the evening, the hostellers were preparing to leave much later. Policemen from various police stations were deployed outside the main gate and also at the gate of Chromepet railway station. The hostellers did not have their meals for the complete day as a sign of protest and rest all other students also joined them. They squatted outside the hangar and formed a chain till Rajam Auditorium.
