The growth of data — both simple and complex — coupled with increasing demands to manage the data with effective data management systems in diverse fields has opened up the need to have an industryoriented understanding of the subject. To address the needs of the industry, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Delhi, has launched a new MTech (CS) course with a specialisation in data engineering.
“This course has been designed to bridge the gap between industry expectations and academia. Usually MTech courses lay emphasis on theory but our course has been designed both by industry experts and faculty members from IIIT to offer a hands-on experience. After completing this course, students will be able to deliver from day one in the industry. The focus of this course is to look at equipping students with covering theory, fundamentals and a hands-on experience with real-world applications,” says Anirban Mondal, associate professor, IIIT.
The areas covered in the course include advanced algorithms, SE for information-intensive systems, database implementation, data mining, statistics, information integration, information retrieval, machine learning and streaming data processing among others.
“The four-year programme has course projects where students use tools to analyse data. They are required to write programmes. Students will get a guide/mentor from the industry for their projects. The final semester project will be undertaken in collaboration with the industry,” says Mondal.
Four faculty members will teach the core subjects and one or two faculty members will teach the theory aspect of the course.
“After students complete the course, they can join the industry or pursue higher studies. We are in talks with the industry so that students can opt for a competitive internship. Based on their performance, they may be absorbed in the organisation where they intern,” concludes Mondal.
About 23 seats are available for the course. Students with a minimum of 7.5 CGPA can apply. An entrance test is conducted, which is followed by an interview.
