Some of the prestigious universities from U.S are providing free online courses that are not only meant for their students, but for other universities also. In this year MIT has declared its online engineering courses that will also offer certificate after completion of the course. Other universities such as Stanford are also offering online courses which are free of cost.
Stanford Engineering Everywhere (http://see.stanford.edu/) has introduced three sections of Introduction to Computer Science namely Programming Methodology, Programming Abstractions & Programming Paradigms to impart education across the world.
Colleges also can implement these courses for classroom instruction. The courses in question have been structured under the Creative Commons license for free use & adaptation of materials.
On the previous year, Sebastian Thrun, Research Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University had operated a free online class on artificial intelligence (https://www.aiclass.com) along with Peter Norvig, Director of Research at Google Inc. The class had drawn around 58,000 students from all over the world. The class continued from October 10 to December 18, 2011. Students were also being provided a certificate after finishing the course. The students comprise of high school learners as well as retired people. The material of this course can be available at https://www.ai-class.com/overview , although this course is closed for now.
For the persons who are interested to learn the methods of building search engines & web application engineering taught by Sebastian Thrun, can access the course at http://www.udacity.com/. The videos also can be accessed in various languages other than English. Two classes regarding the CS101 Building a Search Engine & CS373 Programming a Robotic Car, will also be provided very soon.
Though the teaching method of courses are imparted through weekly new videos & quizzes, examination process have been personalized in order to check cheating..
Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/) is a unique interactive learning program that deserves special mention in this context. It is offering subjects from various universities like the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton & University of Michigan. It offers a wide variety of subjects along with compulsory computer sciences lessons.
Coursera was started by Andrew Ng & Daphne. Both of them were Stanford computer scientists. This course works to provide students a platform where students across the world post answers to questions asked.
