Gujarat students clear 6.86% only JEE main this year

  • Around 6.86% of the total students from Gujarat who took the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) have eligible for JEE advanced. This year, 1.02 lakh students from the state had appeared for the main examination. Of these, around 7,000 have met all requirements for the advanced exam.

    The strength of students qualifying for the advanced exam this year is around 3,000 under 2014. In 2014, Last year, more than 80,000 aspirants had appeared in JEE mains, out of which only 10,787 had qualified for JEE advanced.

    In Gujarat, Bharat Khandelwal, a student of Delhi Public School at Bhopal who scored 320 out 360, is maybe the best performer from the state. Only four students from the state could get more than 300 out of the total of 360 marks this year.

    The percentage of students qualifying for advanced exam from the state is least since 2013. Just 6.86% candidates have met all requirements for advance exam against 13.48% in 2014 and 12% in 2013.

    Gujarat authorities said that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had brought down the qualifying criteria this year. For general class students, the cut-off mark was 115 in 2014; this had been brought down to 105. For OBC students, the cut-off in 2014 was 74; this year it had been lessened to 70 in 2015.

    The principal of a school said that the low pass percentage was simply because of the physics questions in the JEE main paper which the students had discovered extreme. Gujarat board students as well as even those of the Central Boards had found the physics questions tough, the principal said.

    Admissions to Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Pharmacy courses in building universities in Gujarat will be in view of the score in JEE and the board examinations. Authorities said that the Admission Committee for Professional Courses had chosen to give 40% weightage to the score of JEE and 60% weightage to the marks got by applicants in the board examinations.
