Natural Language Processing – ICON, the leading event in the country in the area of language and speech processing is held at the Chromepet campus of Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University from December 16 to 19. Started in 2002, ICON is conducted every year since then. This was the nineth edition of ICON. After moving to various reputed institutions like IITs, CDAC and IIIT-Hyderabad, ICON's 2011 edition had came to Anna University.
Talking about the topics of the conference, P. Mannar Jawahar, vice-chancellor, Anna University, said, “The conference dealt with topics such as theoretical/computational linguistics, machine translation, multi/cross-lingual search, extraction and mining of multimedia information, speech processing and so on in English as well as in various other Indian languages, including Tamil.”
Moreover, T.V. Geetha, a professor of computer science, said, “There was a tremendous interest among engineering students for developing mobile applications, especially in Tamil language. The conference was the place where the leaders of computational linguistics were participating. It was a great opportunity for students.”
The ICON conference included many interesting things like, paper/poster presentations, NLP tools contest and student paper competition, technologies/products exhibitions and demonstrations by various companies and research labs in the area of text/speech processing.
