IIT-Tirupati Begins Functioning from transit campus

  • The 19th Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the country, IIT Tirupati, started operations on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, with aspirants and parents attending the orientation on that day. Classed commenced by Friday, August 7, 2015. Initially, the institute will be functioning from its temporary campus at the Krishna Theja Educational Institutions in Chadalawada Nagar, on the outskirts of the city.

    To start with, IIT Tirupati will offer four streams under its Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) program - Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, each having 30 seats. At present, faculty from IIT Madras will be conducting classes, along with and other professors who have the experience of teaching in one of the IITs. IIT Madras is the mentor institute for IIT Tirupati.

    Infrastructural facilities, hostel accommodation for aspirants as well as houses for faculty members have been arranged, according to reports. Other than residential faculty members, the new IIT would also have visiting professors from IIT Madras. Moreover, aspirants can also avail personal attention as the batch size will be small. aspirants have gained admission into IIT Tirupati through the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced 2015 (JEE Advanced 2015).

    According to the state Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry, IIT Tirupati will have its own high-tech and modern campus at the Merlapaka village of Yerpedu mandal. IIT Tirupati officials stated that the government is expected to allocate over 500 acres for the campus. Moreover, the new institute will be awarded a grant of Rs 40 crore each year during the initial stages towards operational expenses.

    The Union Budget 2014 presented on Thursday, July 10, 2014 included provision for five new IITs to be set up in Jammu, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The Union Budget 2015 presented on Saturday, February 28, 2015 had provision to set up a new IIT in the state of Karnataka.

    Another new IIT which is also to be mentored by IIT Madras is the IIT Palakkadin Kerala, which started functioning from Monday, August 3, 2015 from its temporary campus, with its first batch of 117 students and 10 faculty members. Classes commenced on Wednesday, August 5, 2015
