  • Guru Gobind Singh Indraparstha University (GGSIPU) has not renewed its NAAC certification since its lapse in March. While the National Assessment and Accreditation Council maintains that it has not received the necessary documentation, the university claims that it has made its bid for the compulsory renewal.

NAAC-accreditation is necessary for universities and colleges get funding and recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The gazette notification of January 19, 2013 by NAAC on accreditation stated that institutions should "apply for re-accreditation six months before the expiry of the five-year period." NAAC officials said their documentation process was incomplete and a self-study report which was asked for has also not been submitted.

Under the purview of the notification GGSIPU shall not be eligible to apply for or receive financial assistance from UGC without undergoing assessment and accreditation.

GGSIPU is also liable to face stringent action from the NAAC. The university's recently revamped website and admission brochure for 2013-14 depicts it as "A" grade even though its certification is not valid.  This is a violation of the NAAC norms as institutions are advised not to use the accreditation status if their certification has expired. This is tantamount to misleading the stakeholders and students.

GGSIPU VC D K Bandyopadhyay has stated to the media that their application for re-accreditation was done in March 2012. "We applied in March 2012 and the documents have been sent to NAAC." When questioned over why the university continues to display its old accreditation status, he said: "We are expecting the NAAC's team visit any time."

Accredited in March 2007 GGSIPU’s NAAC validity ended on March 2012. NAAC director H A Ranganath spoke to media sources saying: "It's mentioned in the NAAC website as well that post the validity period, institutions are not supposed to use that status as it amounts to misleading students. Since it has been brought to our notice that GGSIPU is mentioning this in their new admission brochures and website, we'll write to the university seeking an explanation." NAAC's official website has a section titled "institutions accredited by NAAC whose accreditation validity period is over" which features GGSIPU in their list.
