    Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering which concerns the design, improvement and installation of an integrated system of people, material, equipment, energy and technology. Industrial engineering draws upon the principles and methods of engineering analysis and synthesis, as well as mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

    An industrial engineer is basically a systems integrator – a big-picture thinker. The term ‘industrial’ here should not be misinterpreted by the work related to manufacturing. But it covers a wide and varied range of industries from FMCG, IT & system, consultancy, banking & financial institutions to telecom. Industrial engineers work to eliminate wastage of time, money, materials, energy and other resources.


    Opportunities for Industrial Engineers have never been so promising in India. The growing number of industries in India and the cut throat competition has made industrial engineering an asset in the Indian job market. Industrial Engineering is booming sector as every day new companies are evolving and expanding. There are a lot of job opportunities available for you in public as well as private after completing industrial engineering. The industries require expert engineers to increase the production as well as revenues for industry. After completing industrial engineering, you mainly get jobs in the fields like Automobile, Finance Sector, Travels, Information Technology, Human Resource Management, Project Management, Plant Supervision, Health and Safety Management, Management Consultancy and Logistic Management. 

    Now, coming on remunerations, industrial engineers start off with a salary of Rs. 2 lakhs annually and can go upto Rs. 15 – 20 lakhs with experience. Bonus and other perks are warranted with the job. Most industrial engineers have good working conditions, intellectually challenging work, and a high level of satisfaction. Hours can be long, but this tends to be outweighed by the satisfaction derived from the education that each different project brings.

    If you are really interested in the field and want to join industrial engineering as your career, then you have to appear in exams like AIEEE, IIT JEE or state level exams like KCET, WBJEE. To be eligible for these exams, you have to be a pass out of 10+2 (science stream with subjects including English, Physics, Chemistry and Maths). Also, you should be creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail-oriented and also should be able to work in a team and communicate well as these skills work as add on to your career.
