Kaun Banega crorepati (KBC) is a reality show which changed the lives of many people, including its host, Amitabh Bachchan. KBC, actually, first originated in United Kingdom (UK) with the name “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. In the year 2000 it first Indian version aired in India with the name “Kaun Banega Crorepati” popularly known as KBC. The game show became a massive hit within no time. The reasons which made KBC such a big hit in India were its different concept and the charm of its host Amitabh Bachchan. Though Bachchan was going through a crisis of his career at that time, his comeback in this game show made him a star in people’s eyes.
This reality game show is certainly less about knowledge and more about money and personality. It is a format where people get a chance to win money for themselves to the extent of 1 crore. They prepare themselves only according to the questions that generally come up in KBC. This restricts their knowledge. As far as the common people are concerned, the Multiple Choice Questions that come up in KBC do not help much to increase their knowledge.
When we see the money aspect, the lakhs and crores of people who try every season to participate in the show actually, give in lakhs and crores of rupees to the producers of the show. The various tactics are being adopted by the show very shrewdly to earn more and more money. One such tactic adopted in this season is ‘Ghar Bethe Jeeto Jackpot’ where people get a chance of winning a jackpot worth Rs. 1,00,000 by sitting at home just by replying to the question via SMS and phone calls. Also, various tactics are being adopted in order to increase the TRPs of the show which again pay them money. For instance, calling of celebrities on the show and this year’s theme of focusing on common people who have struggled a lot in their life.
Now when we talk about personality we see that the aspects of money and personality are closely related to each. It is not only the money factor which makes a show hit but it is also the personality of the host that matters. Let me give you an example. When the first season of KBC came out in 2000 it became a massive hit with the host Amitabh Bachchan. Soon after two new other game shows launched on the format of KBC only, named, “Sawal Das Crore Ka” and “Chappar Fadke” with the hosts Anupam Kher and Govinda, respectively. While the winning amount in “Sawal Das Crore Ka” was increased to 10 crores, the wining amount in “Chappar Fadke” was unlimited. Both the shows did not do well. Infact, when in another season of KBC, Shahrukh Khan came as a host, the TRPs fall down tremendously. Amitabh Bachchan has a charm in himself as a host which mesmerizes people. Every season, thousands of people participate and wish to be seated on the Hot Seat in front of Mr. Bachchan. The love and respect that he has received from the people through KBC is unexpressive even for himself. He is one of the most successful hosts of Indian Television Industry.
In the conclusion, it would not be wrong to say that ‘KBC is less about knowledge and more about money and personality.’ Though the knowledge of the contestants get enhanced so some extent yet it gets restricted. Moreover, there are numerous techniques adopted by such shows in order to earn more money and knowledge based questions are a part of such techniques. Also, the factor of personality matters a lot in such shows which can make a show successful or flop as is visible in the case of KBC.
