  • The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday ushered in a new era of primary education when mayor Sovan Chatterjee inaugurated an English medium school at Kareya Road on Friday afternoon.

Around 100 students from the adjoining slums have already enrolled in this new civic school and have been provided with uniforms and school kits by KMC education department.

Sashi Panja, member of mayor-in-council overseeing KMC education department had earlier roped in teachers from reputed English medium schools to train KMC teachers. He had also organized a workshop on English by British Council for the teaching staff. "Now our teachers can impart lessons to the students who come from a different social background in a language that will prepare them better in future," said Panja.

KMC is planning to open six more English medium schools in areas like Beniatola Lane, Fakirchand Mitra Street, Shyama Charan Pal Lane, Sashibhusan De Street, Durgacharan Doctor Lane and Brajen Ganguli Street. Parents have shown interest in getting their wards admitted to these civic schools.

The education department is also making efforts to put a check on the rate of drop-outs in KMC schools. "We have decided to ensure mid-day meals at all KMC schools to prevent drop-outs. We will ensure that the teachers at the newly introduced English medium school teach the students keeping their interest alive in the foreign language," a KMC education department official said.
