University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a decision that the teachers hired from 1991-2000 are not required to clear NET/SET exam. This resolution, taken on August 26, has come as a big relief for thousands of teachers of Maharashtra as the careers of all these teachers had come to a halt after UGC had made mandatory for all the teachers to clear NET.
UGC has now allowed universities to consider the service of teachers hired between September 19, 1991 and April 3, 2000 as regular from their date of joining. The decision came after the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organization protested against the compulsion of clearing NET in Delhi.
“The order has come as major relief for many teachers who were affected by the policy. Though UGC passed the order in 1991, Maharashtra, as well as other states, implemented it much later. Careers of several teachers were blocked after the eligibility criteria was made compulsory by the state not only for future but also for teachers appointed on or after September 19, 1991,” said an office-bearer of MFUCTO.
