The proposal for the establishment of the National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM) has been approved by the Union cabinet. The proposal was raised by the department of agriculture research and education under the Ministry of Agriculture. The institute is to be established in Raipur, Chhattisgarh during the 12th Five Year Plan at a cost of Rs 121.10 crore.
Not very easily Chhattisgarh has got the project as there were several states in the queue. The consent of the Union government means a lot to Chhattisgarh because this one is going to be the first institute to address the impact of biotic stress and harness potentials of emerging tools of biotechnology in agriculture.
The institute will be under Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and the centre govt. Will allot Rs 250 crore for the first phase of institute’s set up. Chhattisgarh government has allotted 105 acres for the institute in Baronda which is 25 kilometers from Raipur.
