  • National Institution of Fashion Technology (NIFT): Leading Fashion Institute in India

When Prasun Mazumdar started his design journey way back in 2004, he had not dreamt that one day he will have his own graphic design firm. Today, he not only has his own design company but clients his contemporaries would die for - the credit for which all goes to his alma mater National Institute of Fashion Technology.

He fondly recollects the days spent in design studios and intellectual discussions held on the steps of the ‘kund' (the central area on campus) with classmates and the time spent watching plays and fashion shows that were the talk of the town. "I especially cherish the freedom that was given to us to experiment and express our creativity and the freedom to excel in all our endeavours," he says. Ask him for some tips for the batch that is appearing for the NIFT Exam the coming week, he says "creativity, logical aptitude and time management is the key."

USP: The institute has excelled in the thought leadership by its unique integration of creative genius with technological competence. Student speak: Besides design and ahrd work, the students also get to eat well. Great food available in the "wholesome cafeteria." Also get fresh juice and momos on campus. Canteen is open till eight in the evening. Our lifeline is the ‘bhaiya' in the canteen who picks up our plates and the photocopy bhaiya in the library who is kind enough to give us print outs till late in the evening. Subhash paanwallah satiates our hunger with maggi and boiled eggs. The institute also has a well-stocked stationary shop where everything relating to design is available - textile sheets, needles, clay and fabric.

Alumni speak: NIFT has more than 8500 alumni since its inception in 1986 who are working with the industry. The NIFT Alumni Association provides a platform for an active mutually beneficial contribution to the alma mater.

Students in third year get to put a show and there are best designer award categories. Dance, sports and fashion shows are also held. "It's absolute fun for three days. It gives us a platform to do something else besides work. It's taking creativity to a whole new level." Students get to hold their own shows - they get to do their own choreography, modelling, lighting and even set design.

The institute holds several cultural and inter-college sports events. It also has an excellent basket ball court and ‘kund' where discussions, shows and even street plays are held.
