Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, announced the setting up of the education commission on the eve of 65th Independence Day. The decision to appoint the commission has been taken to improve the quality of education in the country. PM also talked about universalizing secondary education in his speech on the following day.
Dr. Singh in his speech said that vocational education and skill development have acquired new importance and considering the major changes, the government has decided to appoint the commission.
In RTE, education is free and compulsory up to 8th standard. After the universalisation of secondary education, the education will become free and compulsory up to 10th standard.
Emphasizing on secondary education, Dr. Singh said, “Today every citizen has the right to elementary education. We are now considering universalisation of secondary education. “
Noting that the 11th Five Year Plan has been completely dedicated to education, Dr. Singh promised to focus on health sector in the 12th Five Year Plan.
“I have often referred to the 11th Five Year Plan as an education plan. We will lay the same emphasis on health in the 12th plan as we laid on education in the 11th plan.” Dr. Singh said.
