Bhaskar Ramamurthy, an ex-student of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), has been appointed as its new director.
On Thursday, it was conveyed to the IIT-M Board of Governors Chairman Prof. M.M. Sharma that the appointment of Prof. Ramamurthy has been approved by the President of India, Pratibha Patil.
“The chairman informed me this morning. I will assume charge on Friday morning,” said, Ramamurthy. He further continued, “IIT-M, along with the oldest IITs, has to elevate itself to the next stage in fundamental and translational research as both were required.”
With a view to contribute to the fields of education and agriculture, the institute would continue to pursue fundamental research which would enhance the global knowledge and would also encourage the increase of innovation and technology. Prof. Ramamurthy expressed his views and said, “People are looking up to the IITs to improve the quality of their lives, especially in rural India.”
The new director also pointed out that the research would be a major area of focus here. Most of the IITs have doubled the Ph.Ds in the past five years but still the output was modest compared to that of China and doctoral scholars were required for industry and teaching.
Prof. Ramamurthy was the Dean of Planning at IIT-M till now. He graduated from IIT-M in 1980 with a B.Tech in Electronics Engineering. After completing his graduation, he went to the University of California to pursue his M.S and Ph.D. After completing his studies, he joined the AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States and worked on problems in indoor wireless communications. In 1986, he finally joined the faculty at the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-M.
He has done many research works up till now and some his research works include, modulation and coding for mobile communications, wireless communication networks and design and implementation of wireless local loop systems.
Also, he is a founding member of the reputed Telecommunications and Computer Networking Group (TeNeT) that has come up with various products up till now like Rural ATM and Indic Computing.
