A good news for all the students as Supreme Court passes a judgment where a student will be entitled to the photocopy of his/her answer sheet under Right To Information (RTI) Act. The judgment has been passed to ensure transparency in the education system.
In Mumbai, students and parents appreciate SC’s decision. On Wednesday morning, the authorities who conduct examination were trying to get the copies of the judgment. Ujwala Patil, chairperson of the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination, said, “Till now, the state board did not entertain any RTI applications that students filed to view their answer books as there were several conflicting judgments by various courts. I cannot, comment on what the board will do next until we get the copy of the Supreme Court judgment.”
It is worth to know that the Mumbai University and bodies which conduct examinations in the state approve students to check their corrected answer sheets. The SC judgment could make a difference in a sense that it can exempt students of the fee that they were paying up till now to access their answer sheets. Currently, the undergraduate and postgraduate students are charged Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 respectively to have an access to their answer sheets. The varsity gets over 30,000 applications every year from students for photocopies of answer sheets. They are charged Rs. 100 for each subject.
Vilas Shinde, controller of examinations (MU), said, “The University of Mumbai should look at a mechanism that will help the administration. Students should also be asked to pay for the photocopies separately; otherwise, it will be a financial burden.”
