A two step Common Entrance Examination will be conducted from 2013 for the admission procedure to all centrally funded engineering institutions. Institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology & National Institutes of Technology are also included in the list of these engineering centres. The results of class XII board will be considered as valid qualification for admission for the first time.
The entire decision was taken at a joint meeting of IIT Council, NIT Council & IIT Council on May 28 of 2012. All the candidates who desire to get admitted in engineering course will have to appear for the two steps JEE test (main & advanced) & class XII board examination results will be considered for admission. But the method through which these scores will be used is dissimilar for the candidates of IITs & other centrally funded institutes. Human resource development minister Kapil Sibal revealed that resistance from the IITs was the main issue behind not having the same system of admissions. It has been known that there were lots of disagreement from the IIT Senates & faculty federations.
To meet the demands of IITs, the ministry agreed regarding two core demands which stated that the merit list of IIT will not consider class XII results & this process will be based on a system established by the IITs, academic control will remain with the IIT system. The results of class XII board & JEE (main) results will receive equal importance that is 50% to the IITS. This procedure will be applicable for the admission of 50,000 seats which will represent top 20-30 % qualified students with top positions in entrance test.
The final merit list for admission to the IITs will be decided on performance in the JEE (advanced) test. For all centrally financed institutions, the combined scores of class XII board results, JEE (main) & JEE (advanced) will be judged.
