A students’ group from the country’s one of the prestigious institutes VIT ,achieved fourth position in design score in aero-design competition organised at Van Nuys, California on the month of March. The competition was an initiative on the part of Society of Automotive Engineers, USA. “Vimaanaas”, the group of the students prepared a small aircraft by utilizing a plastic bottle & lightweight wood for this contest. They were considered as the best team from India.
According to one of its students, the intention of this competition was to offer engineering students a “real life engineering challenge”. “Our team was formed with a vision to build a formidable aeronautical team to excel in engineering, design and manufacturing of micro-aircraft so as to participate in the SAE Aero-Design competition.”
The group in question participated in the micro-class category. A member of this group revealed that they began to work for this project from September last year. Around ninety percent of the parts were put together & assembled by hand.Lots of innovations were involved in this project. At the time of flight rounds, a licensed pilot flew their aircraft.
Another member of this team said that as their first effort , they had gone through extensive experiment for this project. They had some restrictions in this regard. It was on account of guidelines of the project such as the design should consist of fixed wing aircraft, only two members should possess the capacity to assemble it within three minutes, it should land in the allocated grass field of 200 metres in length & the aircraft should be launched by hand. The cost of this project was Rs. 1 lakh which was managed by this team . They built the aircraft without any assistance.
