Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, the first school of social work in India. In 1944 the school was renamed to its current name. It was recognized as a Deemed University in 1964. The Institute has over 130 full -time faculty members involved in teaching, research, policy influencing and institution building activities. The Institute has over 1150 masters and doctoral students; and was accorded a 5-star rating by NAAC.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, a premier institute of higher learning and research, has invited applications for admission to various regular full-time postgraduate programmes for 2012-14.TISS offers 24 highly competitive socially relevant specialised postgraduate courses. It is a deemed university funded by the University Grants Commission.
