The Mahatma Gandhi Medical College Research Institute in Pondicherry started its journey by admitting its first MBBS students in April 2001. MGMCRI has grown steadily in the past 17 years with recent growth particularly welcomed by its 23rd Batch. The major achievements of the institute are that it has been highly praised by the Medical Council of India.
Under the auspices of Sri Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust, MGMCRI opened up a new chapter in 2007 that saw postgraduate courses launched to train its doctors in clinical specialties. In 2016-19 SBECPT announced an undergraduate super specialist program in Cardiology, Urology, Neuro Surgery, and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery in 2011.
